American University of Sharjah
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a non-profit, higher education organization owned by the Government of Sharjah. The University was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who is also the President of AUS. Whilst AUS applies the American education system it is thoroughly grounded in Arab culture and is part of a larger process of the revitalization of intellectual life in the Middle East.
AUS is a comprehensive co-educational university based on the American model of higher education and offers 26 majors and 42 minors at the undergraduate level, and 13 master's degrees programs run through the following academic divisions: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Architecture, Art and Design and the School of Business and Management. All classes and administrative functions are conducted in English.
Over 5,000 students from all over the world attend classes at the University annually.
In its formative years, AUS benefited from associations with the American University in Washington, DC, Texas A & M University and the American University in Beirut.
Today, AUS is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is licensed in the United States by the Department of Education of the State of Delaware. The University is also licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and all programs are recognized by the ministry and have been awarded either accreditation or accreditation-eligible status. All six of the bachelor's degree programs in the AUS College of Engineering are accredited by ABET, Inc. of the United States.
The University hosts a series of major productions and quality concerts throughout the year, produced by students, local and visiting artists and to which the public are welcome to attend.
